Sacramento River Cats News Release
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. The Seventh Annual Legislative All-Star Game presented by Oracle came down to the last out with Team Republican pulling out some last inning heroics. With Team Democrat tying the game in the top half of the seventh, Team Republican's first two batters had gotten out leaving the game in the hands of Assemblyman George Plescia. On the third pitch, Plescia crushed a solo home run deep to left field to win the game for the Republicans 9-8 and to lengthen their win streak over the Democrats to five games. Team Republican also extended their Legislative All-Star Game series lead over the Democrats 6-1.
This marks the second year in a row that Team Republican won the game in the last inning. Last year it was Assemblyman Roger Niello hitting in the game winning run, giving Team Republican the win 12-11.
Team Republican had the early lead in the game by scoring three runs in the first inning. Team Democrat took the lead in the top of the fourth inning 5-3. But Legislative All-Star Game MVP Assemblyman Cameron Smyth from Team Republican blasted a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth to put Team Republican ahead 8-5. Smyth showed off his glove in the top of the fifth, robbing Team Democrat from a hit with an amazing sliding catch to end the inning. The Democrats came on strong in the top of the seventh inning, with Team Republican walking Assemblyman Lloyd Levine with bases loaded to make the score 8-7. The next batter up Assemblywoman Lori Saldana walked with the bases loaded again, tying the score for Team Democrat. But Plescia's walk-off home run proved to be too much for Team Democrat.
Prior to the game Team Republican and Team Democrat battled in the Third Annual Legislative Home Run Derby. Back-to-back champion Assemblyman Guy Houston from Team Republican was dethroned by Assemblyman Lloyd Levine from Team Democrat. The same championship match up from last year, Levine took charge and blasted 11 home runs in the championship round to Houston's zero home runs. Levine hit 14 total home runs in the derby and gave Team Democrat their first win in the home run derby.
