Polanco To DL, Gnats Add Calero

August 21, 2007 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Sand Gnats starting pitcher Julio Polanco has been placed on the disabled list, the New York Mets announced Tuesday. Replacing Polanco on the roster is left-handed pitcher Angel Calero.

Polanco missed his last start on Aug. 18 with a left shoulder strain. The 20-year-old lefty is 3-8 with a 6.67 ERA in 21 games this season. He has been with the Gnats for the entire season, and will be inactive for at least a week. There are just 14 days left in the 2007 Sand Gnats season.

Calero, also a 20-year-old lefty, has posted a 5-1 record and a 2.79 ERA in 11 games with the Kingsport Mets of the Appalachian League. He has made six consecutive starts and has won five consecutive decisions. It has not yet been announced if he will start Thursday's game, which would have been Polanco's spot in the pitching rotation.

Tonight the Gnats welcome the Braves to town for a three-game series. First pitch tonight is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. It will be an Applebee's Two-for-One Tuesday with two-for-one Budweisers at the game. For tickets and a complete schedule call the Sand Gnats office at 912-351-9150 or visit www.sandgnats.com.
