Grizzlies Say ‘Bayou' To New Orleans With Sweep

August 8, 2007 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) - Fresno Grizzlies News Release

Fresno, CA - The Fresno Grizzlies will be singing a nice tune for the next couple of days after sweeping the New Orleans Zephyrs, winning the series finale 7-0. The Grizzlies will have a day off before returning to action Friday in Tucson, where the teams will do battle for second place.

The Grizzlies (62-57) pick up their 62nd win of the season while extending their win streak to four games, the longest current streak winning in the Pacific Coast League. Fresno's longest win streak this year is eight games.

Grizzlies fans who love great pitching and Grizzlies fans who love to see runs piled up each got a piece of the action. All 7,134 of them got to see Fresno starter Matt Kinney (9-9) remain on fire on the mound as he earned his fifth consecutive start while becoming the third Grizzlies pitcher to reach the nine-win mark this season.

There wasn't a shortage of offense either-at least on the Grizzlies' behalf. Fresno blew it open in the second inning, as it scored four runs as part of a four-hit attack. Zephyrs (62-56) starter Jason Vargas (7-7) gave up five of the seven runs in five innings pitched.

Three Grizzlies had two hits on the night, including Kinney, who also picked up his fourth and fifth RBIs of the season. The most exciting play of the game proved to be the inside-the-park home run by Grizzlies center fielder Fred Lewis, the first by a Grizzlies player this season.

Fresno also continues to inch closer to division-leading Sacramento, as the Grizzlies now trail by just six games to the River Cats and just a single game behind the second place Tucson Sidewinders.

The Grizzlies will head out to Tucson for a four-game series with the Sidewinders for an inter-division meeting before returning to Chukchansi Park for the final eight home games of the season. When the Grizzlies return to kick off an eight-game stretch, it will be another fantastic Tecate Taco Tuesday (presented by Tecate and 95.7 The Fox) as $2 tacos will be served all game and $2 Tecate beers will be served for a special extended time through the 5th inning. It will also be Beat the Heat Tuesday and should temperatures top 100, 50 cents will be deducted from the price of field level seats per degree over the century mark.

Tickets for the final 8 Grizzlies home games are available at the Chukchansi Park ticket office, over the phone at 559-320-TIXS, or online at www.fresnogrizzlies.com.
