Spikes Power Past Auburn

August 3, 2007 - New York-Penn League (NYPL) State College Spikes

AUBURN, NY - The State College Spikes won their second in a row over the Auburn Doubledays once again using clutch hitting to secure their second series win of the year over the first place club in the Pinckey Division.

The Spikes, much like last night scored four runs in the fourth inning and a single run in the fifth to power past Auburn 6-2. State College also added a run in the sixth.

The offensive explosion started in the fourth off starting pitcher Luis Perez (1-3). A leadoff walk to Justin Byler was followed up one out later, as Byler scored on Erik Huber's RBI double, putting the Spikes up 1-0. Huber later scored on an RBI single from Marcus Davis. The inning was closed off with a bang as Austin McClune roped his third triple of the year to right field scoring Davis and Nick Stillwagon, who walked earlier in the inning, putting the Spikes up 4-0.

State College (21-22) added single runs in the fifth and sixth. Byler's leadoff triple turned into a run when Miles Durham hit a sacrifice fly to center field, putting the Spikes up 5-0. The scoring was closed out in the sixth with Matt Cavagnaro's RBI double scoring Davis, who hit a two-bagger himself earlier in the frame.

Moises Robles (2-7) was the long-overdue beneficiary of the generous run support. Robles, who received only 15 runs of support in eight previous starts during the year, went 5.0 innings, walking a season-high four, but only allowed one hit en route to striking out six.

Auburn (25-19) added a two-run home run by Shawn Scobee later in the game for their only two runs of the game.

With the victory the Spikes are just 3.5 games out of first place in the Pinckey Division. The Spikes will look for the sweep tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. by sending LHP Tony Watson (6-1) to the mound. Coverage of the game will begin at 5:50 p.m. on the Spikes Radio Network.
