Norfolk Tides News Release

Jason Dubois lined a single into deep right field with the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the 9th inning, giving Norfolk a 7-6 walk-off win over the Ottawa Lynx Monday night from Harbor Park.

With the score tied 6-6 in the 9th, Norfolk mounted a decisive rally against Ottawa reliever Yoel Hernandez (1-2). Cesar Crespo drew a walk to start the inning, and was sacrificed to second by Tike Redman. After an intentional walk to Adam Stern, Mike Cervenak grounded out to third base, putting runners at second and third with two out. Terry Tiffee was then intentionally walked, and Dubois followed by drilling a 1-0 offering from Hernandez over the head of right fielder Pedro Swann, scoring Crespo and giving Norfolk the win.

Dubois finished the night 3-for-5, doubling and scoring in both the second and fourth innings.

Ottawa had a great chance to grab the lead in the top off the ninth, as the Lynx loaded the bases off Tides' reliever Jim Hoey with nobody out on two infield singles and an error. Norfolk summoned reliever Tim Kester (7-8) in to relieve, and the right-hander retired Brennan King on a shallow fly ball to right before Dusty Wathan lined out to third. Kester then induced a ground ball to shortstop off the bat of Michael Garciaparra, ending the threat with the score still tied at six.

Norfolk plated four runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to take a 6-2 lead, as Val Majewski doubled home two runs and Alberto Castillo added an RBI single.

Castillo finished the contest 2-for-3 with a walk, while Adam Stern helped to pace Norfolk's 12-hit atack with three singles.

The Lynx pulled to within 6-5 on a three-run home run by Chris Roberson in the 7th inning, then tied the score an inning later on a bases loaded walk to Carlos Leon.

Tides' starter Kurt Birkins pitched very well, yielding two runs on four hits in six innings of work. The southpaw walked three and struck out four, lowering his ERA to 3.34, which ranks 4th in the International League.

The Tides and Lynx will meet for the final time on Tuesday night, with southpaw Garrett Olson (8-6, 3.15) set to take the hill for Norfolk against Ottawa lefty Fabio Castro (4-3, 2.78). First pitch from Harbor Park is set for 7:15.
