Indians Light Up Hawks Pitching in 9-3 Win

July 24, 2007 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Spokane Indians News Release

SPOKANE, WA - The Indians (14-20) may have been roughed up last night, but did the roughing up tonight as they rocked the Hawks (17-18) for 14 hits in a 9-3 victory, taking the three game series from the Northwest League East division leaders.

Spokane moved to within two and half games of Boise in the standings, and head into a five-game series at Avista Stadium tomorrow against the Everett AquaSox. The AquaSox are in last place in the NWL West Division.

Starter Derek Holland (2-3) was solid on the mound for the Indians, picking up the win after pitching five innings and giving up only three hits and an earned run in the third. Spokane tied the game in the fourth inning thanks to Eric Fry's second home run in just two days. Spokane exploded for four runs in the next frame. Tim Smith drove in a run to start the scoring, followed by another RBI single by Renny Osuna and Jonathan Greene's 25th RBI of the season.

A throwing error to third base by Boise catcher Mario Mercedes allowed Osuna to come home and give Spokane the 5-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Osuna went 4-5 with one RBI and improved his batting average to .289 on the season.

The Hawks cut into that lead in the top of the 8th with a long sacrifice fly by Ty Wright and then an RBI single by Anthony Thomas to make it 5-3.

Relief pitching came through for the Indians though, as Ryan Falcon and Keisuke Ueno combined to strike out seven and allow only three hits.

Spokane struck back in the bottom of the frame, as Tim Smith drove home Andres James. Then Greene continued his fantastic performance at the plate by driving home his 26th and 27th RBI of the season with a double. The bleeding didn't stop there as Chris Gradoville added another RBI single and put the Indians up 9-3.

The Indians struck out 13 batters tonight, and fans will be hoping they'll do the same tomorrow for 10K's for $10K presented by F&M Bank and 103.1 KCDA. If Spokane's pitching staff strikes out 10 or more batters, one lucky fan will win $10,000.
