Borrell Shines in Midland Win

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Cliff Pennington and Casey Myers homered and Danny Borrell faced two over the minimum in six innings of work as the Midland RockHounds defeated Corpus Christi 6-1 in Texas League action Sunday at Whataburger Field.

Borrell (3-0) and Josh Muecke matched zeros before Pennington, a Corpus Christi native, led off the RockHound fourth with a solo home run, his first as a Double-A player.

Midland doubled its advantage in the fifth on another solo shot to left by Myers, his third of the season

Borrell struck out seven. He gave up singles to Ray Sadler (2nd inning), J.R. Towles (4th) and Josh Flores (6th). Borrell did not walk a batter and threw 71 pitches.

Muecke permitted two runs and three hits over six innings. He walked two and fanned five. Anthony Recker's fifth-inning double was the only other hit allowed by Muecke (3-5).

The Hooks scratched in the eighth against James Simmons on Todd Self's sacrifice fly to left field. Neil Sellers and Edwin Maysonet opened with back-to-back singles before Tommy Manzella sacrificed them to third and second base, respectively.

Midland pulled away with a four-run outburst in the ninth off Kyle Middleton. Javier Herrera's single to left scored Brian Snyder and Vasili Spanos. Snyder reached on a one-out walk before Spanos doubled to the gap in right-center. Herrera and Richie Robnett sprinted home on Luke Appert's double over Self's head in right field.

Corpus Christi has scored two or fewer runs in four of its last five games. The Hooks are 11-12 in the second half of the TL season. Midland is 9-14.

The teams meet Monday in a 7:05 contest with Midland's Ben Fritz (8-6) facing Josh Miller (2-3).
