WILLIAMSPORT, PA -- All good things must come to an end, and the Spikes nine-game winning streak did just that on Thursday evening as the Spikes fell to Williamsport 3-1. The ace of the Crosscutters staff, Drew Naylor (4-0), got the win after striking out 11 and allowing only one run on seven hits through his seven innings of work. Austin McClune paced the Spikes offense going 2-for-4 with a run scored, but the Spikes left eight runners on base which proved too much to overcome.
Williamsport wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, scoring on a Michael Taylor sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first to take the early 1-0 edge. The Spikes drew even two innings later when Keanon Simon scored McClune with a two-out double and knotted the score at 1-1 heading into the fourth.
The ‘Cutters would break the tie with single runs in the fifth and sixth to take a 3-1 lead into the late stages of the game. In the top of the seventh however, the Spikes looked like they would cut into the deficit after getting runners on first and third with only one out, but Matt Cavagnaro and Simon both struck out to end the threat. State College was unable to mount a rally against the Williamsport bullpen over the final two innings and the ‘Cutters held on for a 3-1 victory.
RHP Moises Robles (1-3) suffered the loss after allowing three runs on eight hits over 6.0 innings of work.
The Spikes will look to start a new winning streak when they take on Williamsport in the rubber game of the three game set tomorrow evening at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Game time is set for 7:05 pm when LHP Tony Watson (2-0, 1.14) takes the mound for State College. The Spikes will head on the road for three games in Vermont after closing out their three-game set against Williamsport. Great seats are still available for tomorrow's game and they can be purchased over the phone by calling 877-99-SPIKES, logging on to StateCollegeSpikes.com, or by visiting the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park box office.
