Gimenez homer helps lift Tribe

June 24, 2007 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Kinston Indians News Release

A two-run home run by Kinston's Chris Gimenez broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning and pushed the K-Tribe past Salem 6-3 Sunday at Grainger Stadium. With the score tied 2-2 after three innings Salem and Kinston sat through a two hour rain delay to get to the result, which came five hours after play started. Kinston's Jim Deters (6-2) picked up the win, coming in after the rain delay and pitching four plus innings of scoreless ball. Deters gave up just four hits, while striking out two. Erik Stiller came in to close it out and pick up his first save of the season. Ryan Edell started the game for Kinston and was roughed up for six hits and two earned runs in three innings. Salem had five singles in a row to start the top of the second inning, taking a 2-1 lead and putting Edell in a tough spot. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Edell got Cesar Quintero to foul out and Tim Torres to hit into an inning ending double play. Salem would not score again until the top of the ninth inning. Nathan Panther, Max Ramirez and Gimenez each had two hits for the K-Tribe. Wes Hodges hit streak came to an end at 20 straight games, as the K-Tribe third baseman went 0-4 and was standing on deck when the eighth inning ended. The streak is the second longest in the Carolina League this season.

Kinston returns to action Monday night sending newcomer Steve Wright, the second round pick in the 2006 draft by Cleveland, to the hill against Salem's Sergio Perez. First pitch 7pm on a Monday Buck Night at Grainger Stadium.
