Manship shuts down Kernels, 5-2

Beloit ace Jeff Manship (7-1) held the Cedar Rapids Kernels to five hits and struck out nine over seven innings as the Beloit Snappers sent the Kernels to their second loss in a row, 5-2, on Tuesday night at Pohlman Field in Beloit.

The Kernels were held to six hits on the night and no Kernel had more than one hit. Chris Pettit had a double and RBI in the first inning and Stantrel Smith scored on a wild pitch by Dan Leatherman in the eighth to account for the Kernels two runs.

Kernels starter David Herndon (7-3) allowed four runs (three earned) and eight hits over six innings and struck out six to take the loss. Blake Holler allowed a run on two hits and struck out five in two innings of relief work.

Johnny Woodard and Danny Valencia homered for Beloit and Rob Delaney allowed a hit and struck out two in the ninth to earn his 21st save of the season.

The loss drops the Kernels to 36-27 and 4-1/2 games behind the Snappers in the MWL West standings. Beloit improves to a league-best 41-23.

The Kernels and Snappers will play a doubleheader on Wednesday as Tim Schoeninger and Sean O'Sullivan are scheduled to start for the Kernels. First pitch is set for 5 pm and fans can listed to John Rodgers call the action at www.kernels.com , or on 1450 AM KMRY in eastern Iowa.
