 Great Lakes Loons

Loons Complete Three-Game Sweep

June 12, 2007 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release

An eight-run lead in the bottom half of the ninth inning proved to be just enough for the Great Lakes Loons as they hang on for a 9-7 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps in Comstock Park.

Leading 9-1, Matt Gomez de Segura made his Loons' debut. He surrendered four walks and two hits before manager Lance Parrish was forced to bring in Miguel Sanfler out of the bullpen. Gomez de Segura was charged with six runs. Sanfler entered and allowed an RBI single to Brennan Boesch, a walk to Brandon Timm and an RBI walk to Scott Sizemore, before inducing a fly out to Audy Ciriaco and a ground ball off the bat of Gorkys Hernandez to end the game.

Despite trailing by eight beginning the inning, the Whitecaps brought the potential tying and winning runs to the plate in the ninth inning.

Cody White (7-5) pitched five innings, allowing one run for the victory, his seventh win in his last eight appearances. Sanfler was credited with his second save.

Eduardo Perez went 4-for-5 with his eighth homerun and three RBIs. Carlos Santana added two hits and three RBIs.

The Loons sweep their first series since winning a snow-shortened two-game series in South Bend April 5-6. They improve to 31-34, three games under .500, their best record since they were 11-13 on May 1. The win was the team's fourth straight, tying a season-long winning streak last accomplished April 24-28.

The Loons return to Dow Diamond -- host site of the 2008 Midwest League All-Star Game - Wednesday night for the first of two against the Lansing Lugnuts. Game time for Military Appreciation Night is 7:05. Tickets are available at the Loons' ticket office, at Loons.com, or by calling 989-837-BALL.
