Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (June 12, 2007) - The Burlington Bees (27-37) built an early 3-0 lead and then hung on to beat the Peoria Chiefs (31-33) 3-2 at Community Field tonight. The Bees have now won two in a row to start this series and four in a row against the Chiefs overall. The Bees also finish the first half with a winning home record at 19-18.

The Bees jumped out early against Chiefs' starter Jose Pina. Brady Everett led off the second with a single and moved to third on a double by Michael Thompson. After a groundout, Jase Turner drove in Everett with a sacrifice fly to center and a 1-0 lead. The Bees added their final two runs in the third after two were out. Pina started the rally with a walk to Kurt Mertins. Mertins then stole second and scored on a base hit by Everett for a 2-0 lead. Thompson then rifled his second double of the game down the left field line to score Everett. Thompson finished 3-3 and was also hit by a pitch. Pina (1-7) came out after 4.2 innings pitched and Jayson Ruhlman finished the final 4.1 innings for the Chiefs. Ruhlman allowed just one more hit.

Bees' starter Everett Teaford (2-6) worked through six innings plus two batters in the seventh to earn his first win since April 14th, which was also against the Chiefs. He allowed three hits and two walks but no runs over the first six innings, but ran into trouble in the seventh. Yusuf Carter opened the seventh with a single, stole second, and scored on a base hit by Alfred Joseph to get the Chiefs on the board. Henry Barrera came on in relief and allowed a base hit to Matt Canepa before Jonathon Mota popped out on a bunt for the first out of the inning. Matt Camp drove in Joseph with a single to center to get the Chiefs to within one at 3-2, but Barerra got out of the inning with a flyout and a strikeout to keep the Bees on top.

Jim Wladyka took over on the mound for the Bees in the eighth and put himself in a tight spot by walked Russ Canzler and Ryan Norwood to start the inning. The Bees pulled the corners in tight expecting Carter to bunt, but he swung away and bounced into a 6-4-3 double play. With Canzler at third, Wladyka got Joseph to ground out to end the inning and stranded the potential tying run at third. Wladyka came back out for the top of the ninth and set the Chiefs down in order to record his first career save. He is now the tenth different pitcher to record a save for the Bees this year.

This series continues tomorrow night at O'Brien Field in Peoria. LH Matt Campbell (4-2, 3.47) will start for the Bees against RH Jake Renshaw (5-3, 4.61) for the Chiefs. The game starts at 6:30 and will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:10.
