Kane County Cougars News Release

CLINTON, Iowa - John Herrera posted a quality start and Inoel Deaza posted two perfect relief innings, but the Kane County Cougars lost, 3-1, Tuesday night against the Clinton LumberKings in the finale of a two-series at Alliant Energy Field. The Cougars are now 1-5 against the second-place L'Kings but have lost the five games by a total nine runs.

Herrera (2-6) allowed a homer in the third and two runs -- one earned -- in the fourth for a 3-0 deficit, but he recovered to last six innings in the spot start and notch his sixth quality performance of the season. He yielded five hits, walked two and struck out four in the loss.

The Cougars' offense, facing all-star pitcher Omar Poveda, had been handcuffed to two hits through five innings before breaking through a bit in the sixth. Mike Massaro walked, Larry Cobb singled and Greg Dowling singled to center for his 33rd RBI and a 3-1 count. Cobb and Dowling then executed a double steal, but the next two batters were retired to end the threat.

Poveda (7-2) left after seven, and Brennan Garr logged the final two for his third save. The Cougars (20-44) and Clinton (39-23) now shift their showdown to Kane County for two more games starting Wednesday night at 6:30 CDT. Andrew Bailey (1-3) will face Zach Phillips (6-2).
