Augusta, GA - The GreenJackets (45-18) finished off the four game sweep of the Savannah Sand Gnats (18-45) on Sunday with a 9-4 win. Starter Ben Snyder won his second straight game and Ryan Rohlinger and Tyler Graham each homered in the win to back their starter.
Snyder (6-2) retired the first nine batters he faced before allowing a lead off double in the fourth inning. Snyder worked six innings and allowed three runs on four hits while striking out six and did not issue a walk.
Augusta again took advantage of the big inning plating five runs in the second inning for a 6-0 lead after two innings. Marcus Sanders scored the first run in the frame on a fielding error from third baseman Leivi Ventura when Graham hit a ball sharply too him. Mike McBryde followed reaching on an error, again from Ventura, and then Emmanuel Burriss connected for an RBI single scoring Graham for a 3-0 lead.
Burriss then stole second base and McBryde scored from third on the play when catcher Francisco Pena threw the ball into center field. Rohlinger followed with a two-run homer over the left field wall to cap off the scoring in the second, giving Augusta all the runs they would need.
Augusta added three more insurance runs in the fifth inning when Graham connected for his first home run of the season, a three-run shot over the left field wall, giving the GreenJackets a 9-1 lead.
Savannah plated its first run of the game in the fourth inning when Hector Pellot scored on an RBI ground out from Josh Thole. Pellot led off the frame with a double then moved to third on the ground out from Brahiam Maldonado.
The Sand Gnats added two more runs in the sixth inning off Snyder when Daniel Stegall scored on an RBI force out from Maldonado and then an RBI sac fly to left from Ventura scoring Maldonado.
Savannah got its final run of the game in the ninth inning off reliever Paul Lussier on an RBI single from Greg Veloz scoring Ventura from third.
Lussier worked one inning allowing one run on three hits and recorded two strikeouts including the game ending strikeout of Stegall.
Ryan Shaver worked two scoreless and nearly two perfect innings in relief of Snyder, striking out three. Matt Weston's first error of the season was the only miscue when Shaver was in relief.
The GreenJackets open up a three game series with Asheville on Monday night and lefty Clayton Tanner (7-2, 2.22) takes the hill for Augusta. Right-hander Aneury Rodriguez (2-4, 5.21) will throw for the Tourists. Game time is at 7:05 p.m.
Game Notes:
Emmanuel Burriss extended his hitting streak to 10 games finishing 1-for-5 and is 23-for-43 (.535) over the streak including eight multi-hit games.
GreenJackets moved their high water mark for the season to 27 games over the .500 mark.
Augusta moved its magic number down to three games to clinch a playoff spot with seven games left to be played in the first half.
Rohlinger leads the team with eight home runs and four at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
