Kernels Hit Three Homers in 7-3 Win Over Swing

June 7, 2007 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels used solo home runs by Mark Trumbo, Tyler Johnson and Stantrel Smith en route to a 7-3 victory over the Swing of the Quad Cities in front of 2,176 fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Thursday night.
Trumbo finished the night 3 for 4 and scored two runs and Johnson was 2 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and a stolen base. Ryan Mount was 2 for 3 with a triple as the Kernels finished with 11 hits.
Despite a combined 10 runs, 21 hits and four errors, the game was played in a brisk two hours and four minutes. The win snapped Quad Cities seven game winning streak.
Kernels starter David Herndon (7-2) allowed nine hits and three runs over six innings, including a solo home run to Christian Reyes, to get his seventh win of the season. Doug Brandt, Aaron Cook and Barret Browning combined to hold the Swing to one hit over the final three innings.
The win improves the Kernels first half record to 33-24 and ties them with Quad City for third place in MWL Western Division. The Swing fall to 34-25.
The final game in this short home and home series is Friday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium at 7 pm. It will be the first fireworks night of the season, sponsored by Alliant Energy and KWWL TV 7. The Kernels also welcome guests from Robins to the game and area Girl Scouts will hold their annual campout on the field after the game. Gates open at 6 pm.
