Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
The Swing of the Quad Cities lost for the first time in more than a week on Thursday night, as their seven-game winning streak came to an end with a 7-3 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Quad Cities (34-25) fell back into a third-place tie with the Kernels, as both teams race to reach one of the top two spots in the Western Division with only 10 games remaining before the All-Star break. Cedar Rapids (33-24) led from start to finish, benefiting from three solo home runs in the victory.
The Kernels wasted no time jumping all over the Swing on Thursday, as Ryan Mount led off the bottom of the first with a triple to right-center. Mount eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Chris Pettit, and later in the frame Matt Sweeney singled home Mark Trumbo for a 2-0 lead.
Quad Cities trailed 3-0 when they got on the board in the third. Daryl Jones singled with one out and raced to third on a base hit by Donovan Solano. That put him in position to score one pitch later, when Brandon Buckman registered his league-high 50th RBI with a sacrifice fly to center.
But Cedar Rapids added to the lead with a couple of long solo home runs. Tyler Johnson blasted one that hugged the left field line before leaving the yard with one out in the fourth, and one inning later Mark Trumbo also sent one to the streets to extend the advantage to 5-1.
The Swing tried to come back with a couple of runs in the top of the sixth. The bases were empty with one out when Christian Reyes slugged his sixth homer of the year, a no-doubter that cleared the stadium in left field. Jared Schweitzer followed with a single and stole second, eventually coming home to score on a flare, two-out single by Wilmer Alvarado to pull to within 5-3.
The Kernels got those two runs back on the bottom of the seventh. Stantrel Smith turned on the first pitch of the inning and scorched a laser to left that cleared the fence for the third Cedar Rapids homer of the game. Wilberto Ortiz followed by singling to center, and with the help of two wild pitches was able to round the bases to give Cedar Rapids the final 7-3 margin.
David Herndon (7-2) picked up the victory despite allowing nine hits over six innings. He gave up three runs while fanning one without issuing a walk.
Shaun Garceau (4-3) took the loss for the Swing, allowing five runs - four earned - on nine this over five innings of work. The 19-year-old righty struck out five and walked one, but Cedar Rapids was able to get to him in four of his five innings.
