Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release
GRAND CHUTE, WI -- Brandon Buckman drove a two-run homer to snap a 1-1 tie in the top of the fifth inning. That was enough for the Swing of the Quad Cities to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Daryl Jones knocked in the other two runs for Quad Cities as the Swing won their fifth game in a row with the 4-2 win over the Rattlers.
Wisconsin (17-38) scored one run without the benefit of a base hit in the bottom of the first. Alex Meneses drew a leadoff walk. He stole second and third. Meneses scored on a wild pitch by Swing starter Alex King on a pitch that also happened to by ball four to Trevor Lawhorn. The Rattlers threatened to score more in the bottom of the first. King walked two more batters to load the bases, but got his third strikeout of the inning to end the Rattler rally.
Neither team generated much offenses through the first four innings as the game was played in a steady rain. Once the sun came out in the fifth inning, that changed.
Rattler starter Anthony Varvaro hit Tommy Pham with a pitch to start the inning. An error on a pickoff throw to first moved Pham to second. Jones doubled down the first base line for the first Swing hit of the game and to drive in Pham with the tying run. Later in the inning, Buckman lined his Midwest League leading twelfth home run of the season to right and the Swing (32-24) went up 3-1.
Wisconsin got their first hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jair Fernandez doubled off Brandon Dickson to start the inning. He scored on a single by Meneses. But, Dickson got out of the inning without further damage.
Quad Cities added a run in the top of the sixth. Jones singled in run and the Swing were up 4-2.
Dickson allowed two more hits over his final three innings of work, but did not allow a Rattler to reach second base. In the ninth, Swing closer Kenny Maiques gave up a two out single, but got the final out for his thirteenth save. The win went to Mike Schellinger, who pitched a scoreless fourth inning with a strikeout.
The series continues on Monday afternoon. Tony Butler (0-5, 4.91) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Elvis Hernandez (4-3, 2.81) is set to start for the Swing. Game time is 12:05pm.
