Yuma Scorpions Team Manager Mike Marshall Also Named PresidentMay 15, 2007 - Golden Baseball League (GBL) Yuma Scorpions
"We believe that Mike Marshall is uniquely qualified to succeed in the dual position of team Manager and team President of the Yuma Scorpions" said David Kaval, CEO of the Golden Baseball League and Managing Partner of the Diamond Project that owns the Scorpions. "He has played at the highest levels of this sport and he has managed for years in the independent minor leagues, he has also served as General Manager in the NorthEast League and Vice-President of Baseball Operations for the Northern League and understands the business side of the game very well."
Marshall, 47, was an All-Star first baseman and outfielder during an 11-year major league career primarily with the Los Angeles Dodgers. One of the heroes of LA's 1988 World Series Championship, he has managed or been an administrator in the minor leagues for the last seven years. He was named the new field manager for the Yuma Scorpions this off-season replacing Benny Castillo who was hired by the Detroit Tigers in October to manage in their farm system. Marshall successfully led the Yuma Scorpions to the Championship of the Arizona Winter League in February. Currently a resident of El Paso, Texas he is moving to Yuma as his new home immediately. Almost 30 years to the date of Atlanta Braves President Ted Turner taking the field as Manager, which only lasted for one game, Marshall is believed to be the first professional Team President/Manager since Connie Mack ended his onfield career with the Philadelphia Athletics after the 1950 season.
"I am thrilled to have this opportunity and believe Yuma to be one of the best cities for minor league baseball in the country" said Marshall. "This is a baseball town, with a great history of the Padres, Yakult Swallows, and the minor league Bullfrogs and Scorpions. The fans are enthusiastic and knowledgeable, the business community has partnered very well with the team, and the city administrators are extremely supportive."
Outlining initial plans for improving the franchise, Marshall went on to say, "In addition to great baseball, family entertainment, and current promotions and events we also plan to announce a Yuma Scorpions Baseball Academy for youth players, a Hispanic outreach program that will include at least two Noches de Beisbol at the ballpark and acceptance of pesos at all Scorpion games, a local Yuma Scorpions Board of Directors along with local team ownership possibilities, increased support of the Yuma Scorpions Booster Club, facilities improvements at Desert Sun Stadium, and much greater activity in the community by the Scorpion's players with the schools, hospital, and other charitable organizations." More details on these programs will be forthcoming.
