Ellsbury Named April Player of the Month

Portland, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce that Portland Sea Dogs outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Month for the month of April. The 23-year old had an outstanding start to the season for the Sea Dogs, hitting .455 (30-for-66) with 10 doubles, two triples, 13 runs scored, 12 RBI, four walks and six stolen bases in 15 games during the month of April. Ellsbury reached base in every game he played in for the Sea Dogs during the month and had a hit in all but one of his appearances. The 6'1", 185 lb. speedster leads all of Minor League Baseball with a .452 batting average and he currently leads the Eastern League in hits (33) and on-base percentage (.518), is tied for the league lead in doubles (10) and is ranked second in the league in slugging percentage (.644).
Ellsbury, a native of Madras, OR, was rewarded for his early season performance with a promotion to the Pawtucket Red Sox of the International League on May 4th. At the time of his promotion Ellsbury had a 15-game hitting streak, the longest hitting streak for a Sea Dog since Brett Roneberg hit safely in 18 straight games during the 2004 season. He also reached base safely in 25 straight games with the Sea Dogs, a streak that dates back to August 27th, 2006, and reached base safely in 61 of the 67 games he played with Portland over the past two seasons.
Jacoby, who entered the season ranked by Baseball America as the second best prospect in the Boston organization, was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the first round of the 2005 draft after hitting .406 with 19 doubles, six homers, 56 runs scored, 46 RBI and 26 stolen bases in 58 games during his junior season at Oregon State University.
