Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, VA - The Norfolk Admirals are proud to announce that defenseman Danny Richmond has been named the team's winner of the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Hampton Roads community during the 2006-07 season.

Throughout the season, Richmond has focused his time and energy on children - striving to be a good role model and positive influence to our area's youth. A player that admits that if he were not a hockey player, he would be a teacher, Richmond exhibits a natural ability to relate to children. Visiting elementary schools throughout Hampton Roads, Richmond read numerous books and spoke to hundreds of students regarding the importance of reading and education in relation to any path you choose as an adult.

Richmond also scheduled visits with the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters (CHKD) and St Mary's Home for Disabled Children. Delivering stuffed animals to children in their hospital rooms, as well as spending time playing games with children able to visit the activity room, Richmond was never one to mind the length of his visits. He spent hours speaking to patients, family members and staff of the hospitals.

Richmond also participated in a radiothon for the St Jude Children's Research Hospital, challenging listeners to call in with their pledges.

Attending hockey games for their first time, children from shelters were treated to hockey skating lessons from Richmond during a post game family skate, and then once again when he skated with families from area shelters during the holidays. For the local youth hockey teams, Richmond spent time with players sharing his knowledge and love of the sport of hockey.

Richmond, 22, is a 6'0", 194 lb. defenseman from Chicago, Illinois. With the Admirals this season, Richmond has 10 goals and 24 assists with 142 penalty minutes in 54 games. He is currently on recall to the Chicago Blackhawks, with whom he has one assist and 44 penalty minutes in 18 games this season.

In recognition of his efforts, Richmond will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming Admirals' home game.

Richmond is now one of 27 finalists for the AHL's 2006-07 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced later this month.
