It was "Miller Time" for Amarillo in 5-1 win over Cotton Kings

Amarillo, TX - Amarillo Gorillas forward Matt Miller collected a pair of goals to help lead them past the Lubbock Cotton Kings 5-1 Saturday night in front of 4,291 fans at the Cal Farley Coliseum in an I-27 series battle. The loss drops Lubbock's record to 22-28-8 and they remain with 52 standing points. Rio Grande Valley lost in overtime to Corpus Christi, so they extend their lead over Lubbock to two standing points for the final playoff spot in the CHL's Southern Conference.
The Gorillas came out full of energy in the first period, and the 3-1 lead they took into the locker room after the opening 20 minutes was pretty indicative to the pace of the period. David Silvertone began the scoring for the Gorillas 1:37 into the contest, as he sped past Kings defenseman Craig Minard down the right side and cut into the slot to slip a shot past Kings goaltender Kyle Stanton. Gorillas goaltender Shawn Conschafter attempted to keep a puck alive in front of the net, but an attempted poke clearance of a loose puck deflected off of Jonathan Hobson with 8:31 remaining in the period and went behind Conschafter for a power play goal to tie the game at 1-1. Amarillo responded just 24-seconds later with a goal by Jason Chafe to regain the lead. During a 4-on-4 even strength session, the Gorillas extended their lead to 3-1 with Miller converting on a breakaway with 1:28 remaining in the period.
After a scoreless second period, the Cotton Kings had any thoughts of a comeback bid diminished by a pair of Amarillo goals 37 seconds apart. The first was tallied by Miller for his second of the game, and it came 5:57 into the third period. Austin Sutter extended the lead to 5-1 immediately following Martin's goal to put the game out of reach at 5-1.
Amarillo heavily out-shot the Cotton Kings 44-27 in the game, and Stanton made 39 saves in the loss. Conschafter stopped 26 of 27 shots to record the win. Lubbock was 1 for 4 on the man-advantage, while keeping the Gorillas scoreless on their five chances.
Lubbock will continue road play Wednesday in Prescott Valley, Arizona with a tilt with the Arizona Sundogs before returning home to host the Tulsa Oilers Friday at City Bank Coliseum.
