Maverick Duo Lead Flyers to Victory

January 20, 2007 - NBA G League (G League)
Dakota Wizards News Release

BISMARCK, ND: The rolls were reversed tonight as the Fort Worth Flyers jumped out to an early lead and then held on to defeat the Dakota Wizards 103-96 to move within a game and a half of the first place Wizards.

The tandem of forward Pops Mensah-Bonsu and guard Jose Barea, both on assignment from the Dallas Mavericks were the difference for the Flyers. Mensah-Bonsu finished with 18 points and 21 rebounds and Barea ended with 21 points and 9 assists.

"Give credit to Fort Worth, they played a great game," said Wizards head coach Dave Joerger. "They played well, especially the Mavericks two guys. Our guys were tired, but gave a great effort in the second half."

Both teams were playing their sixth game in nine days, and it seemed to have an effect on the Wizards, who struggled in the first half, shooting only 37% from the field early on and trailed 56-42 at intermission. Forward Quemont Greer was the workhorse again for the Wizards, scoring 30 points on the night, while playing over 41 minutes of action.

The Wizards, who were sparked off the bench by forward Rod Benson's 17 points and nine points, did make it interesting in the fourth quarter as they used a 13-2 run to battle back and actually held a 94-93 lead with 2:24 left in the game. Overcoming the lead the Wizards spotted the Flyers was too much as the Flyers used a 10-2 run to close out game and earn the victory.

The Dakota Wizards return to action next weekend as they travel to Fort Worth for games Saturday and Sunday. Before the rematch, the Flyers travel to Idaho to take on the Western Division leading Stampede on Wednesday.
