In Battle of Texas, Tycoons come out on top

November 13, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA) Texas Tycoons

The Battle of Texas was played out this weekend with the Houston Undertakers visiting the Texas Tycoons on Saturday night and the Tycoons then travelling to face the Waco Wranglers on Sunday. The Tycoons take the early season advantage defeating the Undertakers 144-135 in Dallas and the Wranglers 126-121 in Waco.

Saturday night's star for the Tycoons was Jonathan Hopkins (6'10''-F/C-78, agency: BeSeenHoop.com, college: Texas A&M - Commerce) who had 29 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks while Brandon Lee (6'3''-G, college: Tarleton St.) put up 25, Josh Gonner (6'2''-G-82, college: S.Carolina) 22, Jerome Rogers (5'10''-G-81, college: N.Texas) and Chris Williams (6'8''-F, college: Tarleton St.) finished with 17 each. In the losing effort for the Undertakers; Keyshawn Reed (6'0''-G-84) and Marcus Session both finished with 20 while Carlos Wheeler (6'7''-F-78, agency: 540 Sports, college: Campbellsville) chipped in with 19. The break neck faced paced style of the Undertakers really kept the pace high with totals of 81, 73, and 74 points between the two teams over the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters. Final score in Dallas had Texas coming out on top: Tycoons 144 and Houston 135.

Sunday's game between the Texas Tycoons and the Waco Wranglers was a hard fought contest as the Wranglers were looking to protect their home floor but Texas's trio of Josh Gonner, Donnie Beacham (6'5''-F-81, college: Texas Arlington),, and Jerome Rogers who scored 28, 24, and 21 respectively played their best when it counted in the 4th quarter leading the Tycoons to the road victory.

With the two wins Texas has moved to 2-1 on the season. The Tycoons will have four home games this week as they take on the Arkansas Aeros on Thursday, Arkansas Rivercats on Friday, Monterrey Veneno on Saturday, and the Waco Wranglers on Sunday. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday's games will be played at 7:30pm while Sunday's feature is a matinee with tip-off scheduled for 4:05pm. The Texas Tycoons arena is on the campus of Mountain View College in Dallas, Texas. Tickets start at just $5.00.
