Interstate doubleheader ends in split

Sioux City, IA - The Sioux City Explorers (18-21) earned a split in the Day/Night Inter-State Doubleheader with a 9-5 win over the Sioux Falls Canaries (16-22) on Tuesday night at Lewis & Clark Park.

The Canaries scored first on a second inning solo homer by Bubba Smith. Smith's sixth long ball of the year gave the Canaries a 1-0 lead.

Sioux City tied the game in the home half of the second. Chris Grossman singled and advanced to second on a walk by Mike Richardson. Robert Mendoza singled to score Grossman and tie the game, 1-1.

The Explorers went ahead in the third. J.J. Burress doubled and scored on a double by Alex Llanos to give the Explorers a 2-1 lead. Llanos stole third base and advanced home on a throwing error by Canaries catcher David Hoffman for a 3-1 lead. Jorge Moreno singled and scored on a double by Chris Grossman to put Sioux City in front 4-1.

The Birds struck back in the fourth. Chad Hermansen got on base with his sixth double of the series and his 32nd double of the season. After Bubba Smith walked, Chris Hall singled to score Hermansen making it 4-2. John Schmitz followed with a single to score Smith, and after four innings the Explorers led 4-3.

Sioux City loaded the bases in the fifth on a single by Jake Daubert, a walk to Mike Richardson and a pitch that hit Robert Mendoza. Billy Keppinger cleared the bases with a double to put the Explorers ahead, 7-3. Keppinger would score on a base hit by J.J. Burress giving Sioux City an 8-3 advantage.

The Birds added a pair in the sixth inning on a two-run homer by Bubba Smith. The blast was Bubba's second of the game and third of the day, and it brought the Canaries within three runs, 8-5.

The Explorers extended the lead to four runs when Robert Mendoza scored on a sacrifice fly by Zach Pace to make it 9-5, Explorers.

The Canaries brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but Sean Kramer struck out Chad Hermansen to end the game.

Sean Donlin (0-6) suffered the loss for Sioux Falls and Chris Swiakiewicz (1-2) picked up the win for Sioux City.

The Birds return home to face the St. Paul Saints for a four-game series beginning Wednesday at the Birdcage.
