New Jersey Jackals News Release
Little Falls, NJ After patiently waiting out a two hour rain delay, the New Jersey Jackals continued the downpour of runs they have been showering on the Sussex Skyhawks, defeating them tonight by a final score of 7-3.
The Jackals ran out their staff ace, RHP Joel Bennett, and he sure did deliver. Bennett pitched 7 strong innings, allowing just 4 hits and 3 earned runs, while fanning an incredible 13 Hawks batters, including the first 4 of the game. Despite the effort, though, Bennett would not factor into the decision, as he left the game in the 8th with the Jackals trailing 3-2 after a pair of 1B Dick Daly, Jr. homeruns and a double by DH Jason Alcott that scored RF Josh Ury.
Heading into the home half of the 8th inning trailing by a run, the Jackals looked as though they might drop their first game versus Sussex at Yogi Berra Stadium. After 2B Joe Mihalics started things off by working a walk, the Skyhawks brought in RHP Julio Perez, who had not allowed an earned run in his last 12 innings of work. In this outing, while he would give up 1 earned run, it was the 3 unearned runs that would doom the Hawks yet again. Sussex leads the league in the dreaded E category, committing an uncanny 98 errors in 69 games, including 4 tonight.
With Mihalics aboard, 1B "Big" Bill Peavey was walked on 4 pitches, putting runners at 1st and 2nd with none out. C Clay Kuklick was given the signal to bunt, and he laid down a beauty. It was scooped up by 3B Mayke Cabrera, who did an incredible juggling act, rushed the throw, and sent the ball down the RF line, nearly into the Sussex bullpen. Mihalics and Peavey both came in to score, while Kuklick rolled into 3rd, and the Jackals found themselves ahead 4-3 with another run 90 feet away after what appeared to have been a routine sacrifice bunt. LF Casey Baker stepped up and got struck in the chest, giving him a free pass to 1st, still with no outs. SS Guillermo Reyes singled home Kuklick, 3B Wilton Veras poked one up the middle to score Baker, and the hit parade continued as RF Alex Fernandez shot a laser into RF for a base knock and DH Joey Gomes smacked another single into RF, bringing in Veras. The 5-run 8th inning was more than enough to propel the Jackals to victory, as RHP Jason Wylie would come in and pitch a perfect 9th.
The Jackals will pile into the bus tomorrow morning and head out to Nashua for the weekend before returning home to Little Falls to collide with the 1st place Quebec Les Capitales and then the New Haven County Cutters. Tickets are available at the Jackals box office, (973) 655-8025.
