Charleston, SC -- Sergio Pedroza homered and drove home five runs, and the Columbus Catfish scored seven times in the first inning en route to a 10-6 win over the Charleston RiverDogs in South Atlantic League action at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Wednesday night.

Pedroza's two-run single in the first capped a seven-run, 12-batter rally, and his three-run blast in the ninth provided insurance after Charleston had crept back within a run. The RiverDogs lost for the ninth consecutive game, five of which have come at the hands of the Catfish.

The RiverDogs, who had dropped eight straight games in their previous road trip, fell below .500 overall with the loss at 26-27. Columbus, now winners of ten of their last 13 overall, improved to 28-25 on the season and 8-1 against Charleston.

The Catfish exploded in the top of the first against RiverDogs starter Edgar Soto (1-2), scoring seven runs on five hits, two walks and two hit-batsmen. After the first three batters reached, Columbus took a 1-0 lead when Soto hit Jason Mooneyham with a pitch.

David Sutherland made it 3-0 two batters later with a two-run single, while Juan Apodaca added another two-run hit, again two batters following Sutherland's. Pedroza, who had singled earlier in the frame, finished to scoring with another two-run, bases loaded hit.

The RiverDogs scored six unanswered to get back into the contest, three driven in by Jose Tabata on a two-run single in the third, and the last on a groundout in the seventh scoring Austin Jackson to make the score 7-6.

But Pedroza bombed a three-run jack with none out in the ninth against Bryan Villalona, scoring Shane Justis who had reached on an error and Ivan DeJesus who had grounded a hit-and-run single.

Villalona had retired the first 12 batters he faced after entering in the fifth until Marcos Vechionacci's error at third base allowed Justis to reach to open the ninth.

Mario Alvarez (3-5) scattered three hits and five runs, only two earned, in five innings to earn his second win against Charleston in the past week. Landestoy Troncoso pitched the final two innings for his second save.

Pedroza led Columbus' attack with three hits in addition to his five RBI, while DeJesus picked up a couple of base knocks. Tim Battle went 2-2 with a pair of walks for the RiverDogs, while Jackson scored three times.

Game two of the series is slated for a 7:05 pm first pitch Thursday, with Charleston left-hander Garrett Patterson (0-1, 1.56 ERA) scheduled to start against Columbus righty Cory Wade (2-1, 3.98).
