Silverbacks men prepare for Charleston

May 19, 2006 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Atlanta Silverbacks News Release

After weeks on the road the Atlanta Silverbacks Men will have a weekend off to recover before heading to Charleston on May 27th. The Charleston Battery, league rivals, are currently off to a strong start with a 2-0-1 record. The men will look to give Charleston their first loss of the season, while welcoming back Adilson DeLima.

"Two weeks off will be very helpful due to the addition of a couple of new players. The extra time will be used to bring them up to speed with the rest of the team before our last game on the road. Ultimately we are looking for a win for our last game on the road before returning home and opening the new stadium," commented Head Coach, Jason Smith.

STEINMANN AWARDED W-LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

The Silverbacks Women were honored this week with Sarah Steinmann being named the W-League Player of the Week. Steinmann, who had Atlanta's first ever hat trick, scored three goals against former conference champions the Charlotte Lady Eagles. In addition, Nel Fettig, Leslie Gaston and Melanie Wilson were all named to the Team of the Week.

"We are really proud of the start that we have had, especially to get four players recognized this week. It was an honor to have these players picked, but it truly was a team effort these first two weeks. As any team knows the first few weeks are always a challenge and it is a true credit to the effort of these players to come in fit and ready for the season," commented Head Coach, Graham Chandler.

The women will continue to fine tune and gear up for Hampton Roads and Richmond on June 3 and 4th. Collegiate players Melanie Schneider, Monica Buff, Megan Tuura and Elizabeth Cook will join the team this week.

"It will be great to finally have almost the entire team in. It is still extremely early in the year and there is a long season ahead. The next two weeks will give us the opportunity to prepare, while gearing up to play at home in our new stadium," commented Executive Director, Laura Fedrigo.

U23's BEGIN HOME SEASON TONIGHT FOR SILVERBACKS

The Silverbacks U23s are looking for their first win this season with two games at home against Ajax Orlando (0-3) and the Cocoa Expos (1-0). The Silverbacks' newest franchise will take on Orlando tonight at 7:30 at Atlanta Classic Cars Field at Atlanta Silverbacks Park and follow up with Cocoa on Saturday night at 7:30. Damone Priestly, joined the U23s last week and made an immediate impact. He scored two goals in the U23s' 2-2 tie against Nashville last week and was honored with being named to the PDL Team of the Week.

"We are excited to be at home after the last two games on the road. We are looking forward to a good crowd and a good result," commented Head Coach, Chris Shaw.
