January 20, 2006 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Yuma Scorpions News Release

(Pleasanton, CA. January 19, 2006) The Golden Baseball League today announced Yuma Scorpions 3^rd baseman Alex Arias has been signed by the Baltimore Orioles as the Field Coach for their Single-A Carolina League franchise in Frederick, Maryland. Arias, 38, had an 11-year major league career, including playing shortstop for the 1997 World Champion Florida Marlins. He came out of retirement last season to play for the Yuma Scorpions and had an outstanding season both in the field and at the plate as he hit .344 with 20 doubles and finished fourth in the league in hits with 109. He garnered Player of the Week honors, GBL Gold Glove honors, and was a member of the GBL All-Star team.

"I am very happy for Alex, but a little sad personally and for the Yuma Scorpions," said Benny Castillo, Yuma Team Manager. "I have known Alex since we were little kids playing on the same youth team in New York City. With his knowledge of the game and great teaching skills it was like we had an extra coach last year. He will be a fantastic coach and should rise quickly through the minor leagues."

In Frederick, Arias joins Team Manager Bien Figueroa and Pitching Coach Blaine Beatty to round out a coaching staff that will prepare the Keys to defend their 2005 Carolina League Championship. Originally drafted in the 3^rd round out of George Washington High School in New York City by the Chicago Cubs, Alex's finest year was 1999 when he hit .303 as the Philadelphia Phillies regular shortstop. In addition to Rickey Henderson, he was one of the best known of the 20 ex-major leaguers that continued their professional baseball careers in the GBL in 2005.

"The Golden Baseball League continues as a launching pad for major league organization opportunities," said Kevin Outcalt, GBL Commissioner. "Twenty players and three coaches already have been plucked from the league with quite a few more under discussion. It is a great example of the quality of our baseball and of the independent leagues providing a valuable service to MLB."

The 2006 season for the Yuma Scorpions opens at home on June 1st versus the defending champion San Diego Surf Dawgs. Tickets, merchandise, and sponsor opportunities are all still available at www.yumascorpions.com.
