Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
Fort Worth - Fort Worth Brahmas team captain Wes Mason scored the game winning goal with just 1:46 left in regulation to give the Brahmas a 3-2 win over the Memphis RiverKings in a Tuesday night CHL contest at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
Mason, who missed the Brahmas last game because of injury, converted a two-on-one Brahmas rush for the deciding goal. Mason scooped up the puck at neutral ice and split the RiverKings defense into the Memphis zone. He then fed the puck to the left to winger Bret DeCecco. DeCecco waited for Memphis netminder Guy St. Vincent to commit to him before sliding the puck back to Mason. The eighth-year pro from Windsor, Ontario tapped the puck into the empty Memphis net for his tenth goal of the season and second game winner of the year.
Mason's heroics helped spoil a valiant come from behind effort by the RiverKings. Memphis forward Travis Banga scored two goals, one at the 19:08 mark of the second period and one at the 11:55 mark of the third, to tie the game at two. Fort Worth had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the contest thanks to a first period powerplay goal from center Cory Stillman and a second period five-on-three powerplay goal from DeCecco.
Fort Worth goaltender Larry Sterling stopped 20 of the 22 Memphis shots he faced to earn the win in net for the Brahmas. St. Vincent took the loss for the RiverKings, allowing the three Fort Worth goals on 23 shots.
The win for the Brahmas, now 10-17-4 on the season, was their first on home ice since Saturday, December 3, 2005. The victory also snapped a three game losing streak for Fort Worth. The loss for the RiverKings was their second in a row and gives them a 11-15-1 record for the year.
Fort Worth will look to win two games in a row when they take the ice again on Friday, January 6 at the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi against the Corpus Christi Rayz. The Brahmas will then return home on Saturday, January 7 for a 7:30 p.m. home game at the FWCC against the Youngstown Steelhounds. The first 2,000 fans through the FWCC gates for Saturday night's game against the Steelhounds will receive a free Bruiser (the Brahmas mascot) Mini-Bobblehead Doll courtesy of KwikKar.
