Bakersfield Condors News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Bakersfield Condors took full advantage of their power plays, scoring three goals on special teams en route to a 5-4 victory over the San Diego Gulls at the San Diego Ice Arena in Mira Mesa, CA, Sunday.

The Gulls didn't waste time in getting on the board. San Diego's Frantisek Skladany fired an early shot on Condors goaltender Davis Parley, and David Svagrovsky followed up on the rebound 1:14 into the first period to give the Gulls the early 1-0 lead. Nikita Korovkin was awarded an assist.

Bakersfield answered with back-to-back goals ten minutes apart. Sean Venedam exchanged cross-ice passes with Reagan Leslie eight minutes later on the power play and finished with a wrist shot to tie it up at 1-1. The Condors took the lead with 1:35 left in the first period as Scott Balan followed a deflected pass into the Gulls zone on the power play and slapped it in past Tom Lawson to make it 2-1 Bakersfield.

San Diego answered right back 23 seconds later when Martin Mandeville executed the feed from Pierre-Luc Sleigher to tie up at 2-2 heading into the first intermission.

The second period belonged to the Condors as they recorded three goals, including Sean Venedam's second power play goal of the afternoon at 6:36 of the second period. While on the penalty kill two minutes later, Alexandre Bolduc stripped the puck from Skladany and drew a penalty shot on the ensuing breakaway. Bolduc took advantage and put his shot over Tom Lawson's right shoulder to give Bakersfield a 4-2 lead. The Condors added to their lead when L.P. Martin found Kevin Kotyluk in traffic at the 11:04 mark to extend their lead to 5-2.

After Bakersfield's 5th goal, both teams replaced their goaltenders. The Condors' Ryan Cyr replaced Davis Parley, and San Diego's Tyler Weiman entered in relief of Lawson. The Gulls cut the lead to two two with 6:17 left in the 2nd when Skladany pushed a soft backhander past Cyr's right skate to make it 5-3 Condors.

After an eventful third period which brought the total combined penalty minutes over 100, the Gulls brought it within one when Mandeville fought through heavy traffic and lifted the puck over Cyr on the power play to make it 5-4. San Diego would pull their goalie, but the Condors held on for the win.

The Bakersfield Condors now look to the regular season, which opens this Saturday, October 22nd, at home against the Victoria Salmon Kings. All fans in attendance will receive a free magnetic schedule courtesy of KGEO Hot Talk AM 1230 and Watson Realty. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:00pm
