Peoria Rivermen News Release
Des Moines, IA (October 6, 2005) - It was a night of firsts for the Peoria Rivermen on Thursday evening in Des Moines, Iowa, as the team won the first game in franchise history over the Iowa Stars by a score of 5-4. Peoria left wing Peter Sejna starred in the victory with two goals, one assist, a plus-two rating, and five shots.
Rivermen winger Mike Glumac put the team up 1-0 with the first goal in Peoria's American Hockey League history about five minutes into the game. Sejna began the play by shoveling the puck from the right wing boards to center Blake Evans, who directed it on towards Glumac. Positioned at the top of the right circle, Glumac quickly fired a shot on net that beat Iowa goaltender Mike Smith.
Sejna and Glumac also combined on the second Peoria goal. During a power play, Sejna stuffed home an easy point-blank shot at the right post after receiving a bullet pass from Glumac that went right across the top of the crease. The time of the goal was 9:50.
Before the first period was out, the Stars got on the scoreboard. Right wing Zack Stortini pared the Peoria lead to one goal with assists from Dan Jancevski and Kyle Brodziak.
After one period, the game stood at 2-1 for Peoria. The Rivermen controlled much of the play in the period and out-shot the Stars 14-6.
The second period featured twice as many goals as the first frame. At the 8:01 mark, Rivermen defenseman Aaron MacKenzie notched a power-play goal on assists from Dennis Wideman and Ryan Ramsay. The Stars, however, answered that goal with one of their own.
With about six minutes remaining in the second frame, Sejna struck for his second goal of the evening. Standing below the goal line with his back turned to the goal, Sejna banked the puck in off of Stars goalie Smith with a pretty backhand play. The unassisted marker made the score 4-2 for Peoria.
From that point, the scoring opened up. Winger Colin Hemingway tallied the final Rivermen goal of the night at 15:26 of the second. Two Iowa goals followed from Marius Holtet and Toby Petersen at 16:28 and 19:36, respectively. The score stood at 5-4 in favor of the Rivermen at the conclusion of the second.
Although no scoring took place in the third period, it was nonetheless exciting. With 4:29 to go in regulation, penalties to Peoria's Ryan Ramsay put the Stars on a five-on-three advantage. Rivermen blueliner Brendan Buckley then drew a minor penalty with 51 seconds to go. But the Peoria penalty-killing unit stood firm, did not allow Iowa to score, and secured a 5-4 victory.
