Toledo hires assistant coach
September 28, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
(Toledo, Ohio) The Toledo Storm of the ECHL announced today that they have hired Stan Drulia as an assistant coach. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"Stan brings extensive hockey experience to Toledo," said Head Coach and Director of Player Personnel Nick Vitucci. "He also has experience coaching in a smaller rink where his Augusta team finished first last season in the ECHL on the power play."
For the last two seasons, Drulia has been the head coach of the ECHL's Augusta Lynx. Stan's first season as a head coach was in 2002-03 with the Orlando Seals of the ACHL. He led them to a 43-14-0 record, a regular season title and a playoff championship. "This is a great opportunity for me coming to Toledo. The Storm has been a highly successful organization for many years in the ECHL, and with two ties to the AHL and NHL this year should be no different."
Stan finished an outstanding playing career in 2001. During his playing days, Drulia appeared in 126 games in the National Hockey League with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Stan also played many seasons in the International Hockey League with the Detroit Vipers and the Atlanta Knights. He was a member of two Turner Cup Championships in 1994 with Atlanta and 1997 with Detroit. Stan was the Turner Cup Playoffs MVP in 1994. Drulia turned professional in the 1990-91 season. That season Stan was a member of the ECHL's Knoxville Cherokees and finished that year with 140 points (63g-77a) and was named League Most Valuable Player. Drulia remains the all-time points leader in the Ontario Hockey League with 439, including his final season in which Stan scored 145 points in 47 games.
Toledo Storm President Barry Soskin echoed Vitucci's comment; "Drulia was a tremendous offensive hockey player with head coaching experience who will compliment Nick."
