Bakersfield Condors News Release

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The ECHL announced that the status of the Mississippi Sea Wolves hockey team for the upcoming season is still unknown. The league has been monitoring and will continue to monitor the situation, but communication is very difficult.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with not only the Sea Wolves staff, players and fans, but all of the people who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina," said ECHL Commissioner Brian McKenna. "We encourage ECHL fans to donate and provide whatever support that they can to disaster relief."

The Condors and the Bakersfield community assisted the Kern County chapter of the American Red Cross with a fundraiser for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Condors mascot Colonel Claw'd, director of community relations Mikie Hayhurst, and public relations assistant Angelese Reed joined television station KGET-TV 17 on Wednesday and assisted with volunteers outside KGET's studios as well as on the phones. Over the course of the fourteen-hour long drive, more than $120,000 was raised for the relief effort.

Condors President Matthew Riley has a close connection to the area, having spent four years in southern Alabama as Executive Director of the Mobile BayBears Baseball Club of the Southern League. "Having lived in that area just prior to coming Bakersfield, it's even more surreal," said Riley. "We were glad to assist with the American Red Cross fundraiser held yesterday at KGET, and hope to be able to help in additional ways, too."

The Condors are presently scheduled to host Mississippi on November 17th, then visit the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on December 2nd. The Sea Wolves are based in Biloxi, which was one of the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Katrina.

The ECHL and its clubs are exploring other initiatives to assist in the relief effort and with the Sea Wolves specifically.

Most charities are requesting financial donations rather than goods or clothing. This enables them to use the funds within the communities that are most affected. To make a donation to the American Red Cross you can visit http://www.redcross.org or telephone 1-800- 435-7669 or 1-800-HELP-NOW.
