Cards outlast Crosscutters

Michael Repole got two outs with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth to preserve the New Jersey Cardinals (St. Louis Cardinals) 11-10 victory over the Williamsport Crosscutters (Pittsburgh Pirates) Monday night at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey.

The Cards improved to 32-34 with the win, while the loss drops the Crosscutters to 36-30. Scott Vander Weg picked up his second victory of the season with two innings of scoreless relief. Ian Heisel took the loss to fall to 2-3.

Repole relieved Jessen Grant in the top of the ninth with the bases loaded and induced Cameron Blair to ground into a fielders choice and Steven Pearce to fly out to center to end the game and earn his first save of the season.

Williamsport scored five times in the top of first for the early lead. Starter Adam Daniels walked three straight batters to lead off the game and load the bases, before James Boones two-run single through the hole at short with the games first run. One out later, Eddie Prasch lined a single up the middle for a 4-0 lead and Euvi Solanos followed with a single to score the fifth run of the inning.

The Cardinals quickly answered back in their half of the first with five runs to tie the score, highlighted by Adam Rodgerstwo-run double and Sean Dobsons RBI single.

New Jersey pushed across three more runs in the fourth to take the lead. Sivira singled with one out and went to second on Carlos De La Cruzs bunt single. Kevin Richmonds single loaded the bases and Sean Danielson walked to force in a run. An error by Cameron Blair scored De La Cruz with the seventh Cardinals run, and Daniel Nelson lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Richmond for an 8-5 Cardinalslead.

Williamsport took the lead in the seventh with four runs off reliever Jeremy Zick. Prasch picked up his third RBI on a ground out, and Solano reached on an infield single to score a run. The Crosscutters added two more runs on a single by Steve Lerud and a sac fly by Jermel Lomack for a 9-8 advantage.

But New Jersey reclaimed the lead in the eighth. Daniel Nelson ripped a two-run triple to left field to give the Cardinals the lead, and Rodgers followed with a double to put New Jersey ahead 11-9.

The Cardinals and the Crosscutters return to action on Tuesday, August 30 for the series finale of the teams two-game set. Game time is scheduled for 7:15. New Jersey looks to send Mitchell Boggs (4-3, 4.30) to the mound, while Williamsport is set the counter with Eric Krebs (1-1, 4.03). Tuesdays game also features an Adam Kennedy bobble head night sponsored by Coca Cola and the Star Ledger and Ladies Night, courtesy of Dunkin Donuts.
