Bowie Baysox News Release

READING, Pa. - Despite missing two starting outfielders, the Baysox offense rapped out 13 hits to support Hayden Penn's seven strong innings as Bowie claimed a 7-2 victory over the Phillies at FirstEnergy Stadium on Friday.

The win kept the Baysox (70-63) tied with Altoona for second place in the Southern Division. The Curve also won tonight against Akron.

Having lost Peter Bergeron and Ramon Nivar to injuries in the past two days, manager Don Werner was forced to play Joey Hammond in right field and inserted him into the leadoff spot. Hammond responded with three hits, two runs scored, and one driven in.

Hammond's play was just one of many things that went right for the Baysox. They jumped on Reading starter Mike Smith early, then continued to score runs as Penn kept the Phillies off the board.

Bowie loaded the bases before recording an out in the top of the first. Hammond singled to start the game, and Brandon Fahey and Simon Pond both drew walks. Nick Markakis grounded into a double play, wiping out Pond at second but bringing Hammond home with the game's first run. Alejandro Freire put the Baysox ahead, 2-0, with an RBI single to score Fahey.

Penn (7-6) gave up a two-run home run to Randy Ruiz with two outs in the first, but surrendered little else. He allowed just two baserunners the rest of the game.

Penn finished with nine strikeouts against just one walk and three hits in seven innings.

Hammond gave the Baysox the lead for good with an RBI double in the second. Markakis made it 5-2 in favor of the Baysox with a two-out, two-run single in the fifth.

Pond and Markakis each added run-scoring singles in the seventh that extended Bowie's lead to 7-2.

BAYSOX NOTES: Bergeron was place on the disabled list earlier in the day with a strained oblique. He injured the muscle while batting during Wednesday's game. OF Woody Cliffords, who had spent most of the season with the Baysox, was transferred back to Bowie from Class AAA Ottawa...Penn is 3-1 with a 1.97 ERA in five August starts...Fahey had three hits on the night and is now batting .292.

ON DECK: The Baysox send LHP Richard Stahl (2-5, 4.35 ERA) to the mound in the second game of the series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. The Phillies counter with LHP Allen Davis (11-8, 3.95).
