New Jersey Cardinals News Release

Jose Mendez singled home Craig Newton in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the New Jersey Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over the Aberdeen Ironbirds Thursday night at Skylands Park in Augusta, New Jersey. The win stopped a 4 game losing streak for the Cardinals (27-30), while the Ironbirds dropped to 20-36. Trey Herne (3-3) picked up the win with a scoreless 10th inning and Sean Danielson had three hits as the Cardinals took game one of a two game set. Russ Brocato suffered his third loss of the season.

The Cards struck in the bottom of the 4th for a 1-0 lead. Right fielder Chad Gabriel led off and reached on a throwing error by third baseman Matt Pulley, went to second on a walk and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Kevin Richmond then lifted a sacrifice fly to left to plate Gabriel with the games first run. New Jersey extended their lead to two in the fifth when Gabriel lined a single to center to score Danielson, who had singled to lead off the inning.

Aberdeen answered back in the top of the sixth with one run against starter Mitchell Boggs to cut the lead in half. Bradford Wiggins led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a walk. After Mark Fleisher flied out, catcher Jason Maxey followed with a RBI ground-rule double to center to score Aberdeens first run.

The Ironbirds tied the score in the seventh off reliever Buddy Blair following a lead-off walk to Zachary Davis. With one out, Davis stole second and moved up to third when Craig Newtons throw skipped past second baseman Jose Delgado for an error. Pulley walked to put runners on the corners, before Wiggins followed with a smash through the hole at second to tie the score at 2-2. Blair hit shortstop Ryan Steinbach with a curveball to load the bases, but worked out of further trouble by striking out Fleisher and inducing a groundball out from Maxey.

The game stayed tied until the tenth. With one out, Newton blooped a double down the right field line, before Mendez followed with a lined shot back up the middle. Davis fielded the ball cleanly in center, but Newton slid just ahead of his throw to score the winning run.

The teams return to the field Friday, August 19, to complete their short two-game series. Game time is scheduled for 7:15. Adam Daniels (1-0, 2.00) is set to make his first start of the season for the Cardinals, while Aberdeen looks to counter with Reid Hamblet (2-2, 4.19). Friday nights game also features a fireworks extravaganza immediately following the conclusion of the game, all courtesy of Ayers Chevrolet and WSUS Radio.
