Guzman's slam backs sparkling pitching

July 29, 2005 - Southern League (SL1) - Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Suns pitchers retired 17 batters in a row to complete a 6-1 victory over the Mobile BayBears in front of 9,615 fans Friday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Joel Guzman stroked a line drive grand slam to left field in the fourth inning, backing a six-inning, three-hit performance by Suns starter Justin Orenduff. Guzman went 3-for-4, leading the Suns' 10-hit attack. Orenduff (4-1) earned the victory, allowing a first inning run on an RBI triple by Ronnie Merrill. Orenduff, who struck out eight batters, has allowed one earned run in his last 21 innings.

Beltran Perez and Hong-chih Kuo retired the final nine BayBears batters, insuring the Suns' victory.

Russell Martin hit a two-strike, two-out RBI double in the fifth inning off BayBears starter Luke Steidlmayer, giving the Suns a 5-1 lead. Steidlmayer (0-2) allowed five runs in six innings and struck out nine. James Loney lofted a sacrifice fly in the seventh to score the Suns' final run. The fly was caught by left fielder Brian Burgamy who dove headlong over a short wall into a berm area.

Right-hander William Juarez (4-3, 4.37 ERA) is scheduled to face BayBears righty Cesar Carillo, a 2005 draft selection from the University of Miami, who will make his Class AA debut at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

The game will be televised on Comcast Sports Southeast, broadcast in English on WFXJ-AM 930 and in Spanish on WEWC-AM 1160.
