Barons' Blakely bashes Biscuits in 10th

HOOVER, Ala. - Darren Blakely hit a 3-run home run off Cameron Smith in the bottom of the 10 th inning to lift the Birmingham Barons the Montgomery Biscuits 9-8 Thursday at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.

Smith entered the game to pitch the tenth. All he needed to do was hold the Biscuits 8-5 lead but instead he gave up four runs, getting only one out to send the Barons home happy. Blakley's homer highlighted the inning and caused Smith to fall to 3-2 on the season.

The Biscuits scored three runs in the top of the tenth to take the temporary lead. Matthew Maniscalco scored on a balk by Barons reliever Paulino Reynoso. Shawn Riggans hit a 2-run double to pad the Biscuits lead at three runs. Reynoso walked into his fourth win of the season.

Elliot Johnson scored on a passed ball and Rico Washington drove in Matthew Maniscalco with a sac fly to tie the game at five in the eighth.

Jason Cromer mowed down the Barons through the first five innings but struggled in the sixth. Cromer began the contest with five shutout innings, allowing just two hits. Cromer fell apart in the sixth though, allowing three runs (2 earned) by walking the bases loaded and allowing a 2-run single. Cromer allowed just three hits and walked three while striking out four in 5.1 innings of work.

The Barons finally got to Cromer in the sixth. Cromer walked the bases loaded with just one out. Ryan Sweeney promptly hit a 2-run single to right. Sweeneys hit chased Cromer. Brian Lockwood came on and allowed Josh Fields to score from third on a wild pitch.

Barons starter Charlie Haeger pitched 6.1 innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out seven Biscuits.

Chairon Isenia hit a fieders choice to give the Biscuits their fourth run in the seventh.

The Biscuits scored a single run in the third when Chairon Isenia drove in Wes Bankston with an RBI single.

The Biscuits got off to an early start against Haeger when Rico Washington singled home Matthew Maniscalco in the first.

Friday, the Biscuits will begin a 3-game series in Huntsville. Right-hander Jim Magrane (0-1, 2.31) will take the mound for the Biscuits. The Stars will start righty David Bradley (4-2, 2.71).
