WEEKLY WRAP-UP: The Cardinals went 3-4 last week, but swept their first season series by taking three straight from the Aberdeen Ironbirds (Baltimore). Earlier in the week, they dropped two of three in Williamsport to the Crosscutters (Pirates) before their successful trip to Maryland. New Jerseys 11-11 record is good for third in the McNamara Division of the New York-Penn League, 5 games behind the front running Staten Island Yankees (New York).

BIRDS WITH BATS: Newcomer SS Tyler Greene, the 30th overall pick in the 2005 amateur draft, started his Cardinal career by banging out 7 hits in his first 22 at-bats, good for a .318 average, which is best on the team. He also has the team lead in stolen bases with 4. After a slow start, CF Yonathan Sivira has begun to heat up, hitting .412 over his last five games, with a homer and 5 runs scored. OF Matt Wilkerson continued to show power at the plate last week, as he hit 2 home runs and drove in 7. He leads the team in both categories, with 3 long balls and 10 RBI. C Brandon Yarbrough, a former 5th round pick, has 10 doubles, best in the league.

CARDS ON THE MOUND: With a team ERA of 2.90, the Cardinals are second in the league in that category, trailing only Staten Island. New Jersey pitchers have given up only 4 homeruns all season, tops in the league. In his last game before being promoted to the Swing of the Quad Cities, RHP Michael Cooper beat Aberdeen 5-0. He surrendered just 3 hits and struck out 6 over 7 innings. RHP Nick Webber has not allowed an earned run over his last two games, a stretch of 8 innings. RHP Michael Gross and RHP Jessen Grant continue to pitch well in relief. Grant has not been scored upon in his last 3 games, while Gross has not given up a run in his last 4 outings. RHP Matthew Trent sits atop the league leader board with 6 saves.

NEW FACES: INF A.J Van Slyke Jr., 21, a 23rd round pick in the 2005 draft from Kansas, was promoted from the Johnson City Cardinals to take the place of 1B John Skorupski, who was reassigned to Johnson City. In 13 games, Van Slyke was hitting .380 with 2 HR and 14 RBI.

WEEK AHEAD: New Jersey starts a six game home stand with three against the Hudson Valley Renegades (Tampa Bay) before three against the Oneonta Tigers. Fireworks sponsored by the New Jersey Herald follow the July 15th game against the Renegades.
