Lake County Captains News Release
Lexington, KY)--Juan Valdes went 3-4 with three RBI Saturday, as the Lake County Captains slipped by the Lexington Legends with a 4-3 comeback win at Applebee's Park.
The Captains (4-5, 44-35) have won two straight games after dropping five in a row.
Trailing 3-2 entering the ninth inning, Marshall Szabo coaxed a lead-off walk from Lexington righthander Andrew Alvarado. Chad Reineke entered the game for the Legends and retired Jose Ortega on a grounder to the mound. Szabo was running on the play and made it to second base. Valdes followed with a deep drive to right that made it over the head of Beau Torbert. Szabo came around to score to make it 3-3.
After Brian Finegan walked to put runners at first and second, Mike Butia hit a sharp grounder to shortstop Clint McGill. McGill flip to Drew Sutton at second retired Finegan, but Sutton's relay to first was low and skipped past first baseman Ole Sheldon for an error, allowing Valdes to race around with the go-ahead run, 4-3.
Righthander Kieran Mattison struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth for his 14th save.
Lexington's Hunter Pence, the SAL home run leader, smacked a two-run homer in the eighth inning off Kyle Collins (3-4) to give the Legends a 3-2 lead. Pence, who was activated from the disabled list earlier in the day, drilled a 2-2 pitch from Collins over the center field wall, scoring Torbert, who had singled. It was Pence's third homer of the year against the Captains, and his 24th overall.
Valdes gave the Captains a 2-1 lead with a two-run double off Juan Gutierrez in the second inning. He finished the game 3-4. He added a bunt single in the seventh.
Lefty Aaron Laffey started for the Captains and worked seven strong innings, scattering four hits. He worked around a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the first by allowing just one run.
The Captains turned three double-plays on the night.
The Captains and Legends will wrap up the series and road trip on Sunday evening at 6:35 (WELW AM 1330).
