Round Rock Express News Release

(ROUND ROCK, TX) – The Memphis Redbirds, losers of three straight, came into The Dell Diamond looking to stop a short, three game losing streak. On the other hand, the Express needed a win to stop an eight game slide. They almost made it.

The Redbirds batting order struggled early against Express lefty Carlos Hernandez. They finally broke through scoring two runs in the fourth to take the lead. Hernandez left after five innings, surrendering only two runs on five hits.

The big blow came off of the bat of Redbirds starting pitcher Chris Gissell. Gissell hit his fourth career home run off of reliever Travis Driskill in the sixth inning to give the Redbirds a 5-0 lead.

On the mound, Gissell kept the Round Rock bats silent until the seventh when he gave up two runs on a lead-off walk to Mike Coolbaugh, a single by 1B Carlos Rivera, a single to C Humberto Quintero, a two-run Barry Wesson single and a sacrifice RBI fly ball off the bat of CF Charles Gipson to cut the lead to 5-3.

The Express got another run in the eighth on a lead-off double from 2B Danny Klassen and a sacrifice Quintero fly ball to make it 5-4.

But in the ninth, Memphis reliever Vladimir Nunez slammed the door shut and the Express dropped its ninth straight game 5-4.

Memphis and Round Rock meet at 7:05 PM on Wednesday with right-hander Brandon Duckworth going for Round Rock against Redbirds right-hander Adam Wainwright.
