 Quad Cities River Bandits

Swing shake up rotation

April 23, 2005 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday transferred right-handed pitcher Matt Scherer to the Swing of the Quad Cities and announced that he will be the starting pitcher for the Swing on Sunday against the Dayton Dragons. To make room for Scherer, Miguel Aguero was transferred to extended spring training.

A 6-5, 230-pounder from Wappinger Falls, New York, Scherer was selected in the 16th-round of the 2004 draft, out of Le Moyne College. In his pro debut with Johnson City in 2004, Scherer went 2-5 with a 4.03 ERA, striking out 43 and walking 16 in 60.1 innings of work. In three seasons at Le Moyne, he went 12-7 with a 3.52 ERA while making 37 appearances, including 22 starts. Le Moyne qualified for the NCAA tournament after both the 2003 and 2004 seasons.

Scherer will start opposite Homer Bailey, the highly touted 18-year-old pitcher who was the seventh-overall selection in the 2004 draft. Bailey, a 6-4, 185-pounder from La Grange, Texas, throws in the upper-90’s and signed for a $2.3 million bonus from Cincinnati after being drafted.

Aguero has struggled in two appearances for the Swing, allowing five runs in 2.1 innings of work for a 10.19 ERA. Entering the season, Aguero had gone 17-16 with a 3.88 ERA in 57 professional appearances.

Scherer will take the rotation spot of Justin Brown, who moves into the Swing bullpen after retiring two batters in his first two outings. Brown was signed as a fifth-year senior free agent out of Charlotte prior to the 2004 draft. He was 2-5 with a 5.40 ERA while pitching at three levels in his pro debut.

The Swing roster currently stands at 25 active players, the maximum allowed by the Midwest League. An updated roster follows this release.

UP NEXT: The Swing begin a nine-game homestand today, with the first of four games against the Dayton Dragons. Kyle McClellan (0-0, 4.50) will go to the hill against Jon George (0-0, 7.71). First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

PROMOTION: Saturday will be Augustana College Day at John O’Donnell Stadium, a day for Augustana College to show appreciation for its students, faculty and alumni. In addition, it will be the third Swing into Reading Day of the season, with several hundred area children on-hand to celebrate their successful completion of the program. Tickets are available to all Swing home games by calling (563) 328-2000.
