Memphis Xplorers News Release

Southaven, MS-The af2 league office awarded Xplorer OL/DL Khreem Smith the ADT Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in week one against Bossier-Shreveport.

Smith, a Jamaican native, sacked Bossier quarterback Caleb Slover three times in a 63-24 victory for Memphis at the CenturyTel Center in Bossier-Shreveport. His first sack went down as a safety in the first quarter, and gave the Xplorers their first lead of the game at 9-7. The Xplorers would lead the rest of the way.

“I am not used to playing in games where giving up 24 points is a successful day for the defense,” stated Smith. “The scoreless second half is more of what would have constituted a good day back in college.”

The third and final sack of the game for Smith came in the second half, and forced a fumble that set up another field goal for the Xplorers. Memphis has always prided itself on Head Coach Danton Barto’s pass rush.

“I believe that Khreem Smith is one of the most talented and athletic lineman that I have ever coached,” stated Barto. “He had a good game, but I believe that he can improve over the course of the season.”

Smith played collegiate football for the Cowboys at Oklahoma State. His efforts in the Villages Gridiron Classic played annually down in Florida earned him defensive MVP honors for the game.

The Xplorers are 1-0 on the young season, as they head to Amarillo to battle the Dusters this Friday at 7:00pm. All games can be heard on the Xplorers flagship station, The Mighty 790 WMC. For group and season ticket information call 662-393-3761. Memphis Xplorers Arena Football! Back in Black!
