Bridgeport Islanders News Release

NORFOLK, VA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, scored five unanswered goals and got a hat trick by Justin Papineau en route to a fight-filled 7-3 road win over the Norfolk Admirals Friday.

After skating through a scoreless first period against one another Wednesday, the teams combined for four goals in the first 20 minutes Friday.

Shawn Thornton gave Norfolk a 1-0 lead with his fifth goal of the season, and second in as many games, off assists from Duncan Keith and Pavel Vorobiev at the 6:05 mark, but Nathan Gillies, who signed a tryout contract Tuesday, answered for the Sound Tigers with the first AHL goal of his career, unassisted, just 1:04 later.

The Admirals regained the lead when Keith pinched in from the left point to one-time a bullet of a cross-ice feed on the power play for his ninth goal of the season off assists from Jason Morgan and Vorobiev at 16:08, but the Sound Tigers answered again just 2:35 later when Chris Campoli scored his tenth goal of the season, on the power play, off assists from Jason Guerriero and Barrett Heisten. The assist was the first professional point for Guerriero who joined the Sound Tigers on a tryout contract Wednesday morning.

Norfolk pulled starting goaltender Adam Munro, who had a 29-save shutout Wednesday, in favor of ECHL call-up Mike Brodeur to start the middle frame, and the Sound Tigers took their first lead of the contest on the first shot Brodeur faced when Papineau blasted home his 13th goal of the season off assists from Chris Campoli and Bruno Gervais to make it 3-2 at the :28 mark.

The Sound Tigers then exploded for the fastest three regular-season goals in team history upping the lead to 6-2 in a 1:50 span late in the period.

John Morlang made it 4-2 with his sixth of the season off assists from Gillies and Ed Campbell at 12:24, Papineau added his second of the game off an assist from Justin Mapletoft at 13:52 and Matt Koalska notched his seventh at 14:14 off assists from Heisten and Steve Regier.

Mapletoft's assist was his 18th of the season and the 77th of his Sound Tigers career moving him into first place in the team's all-time record book in that category.

Following a quartet of third-period, off-the-draw fights, including three on consecutive face-offs in a three-second span early in the frame, the Admirals pulled to within 6-3 on a shorthanded goal by Vorobiev, his 17th tally of the year, with 3:20 left to play.

Norfolk pulled Brodeur in favor of an extra attacker with just over a minute left to play while on the power play, but Papineau completed the hat trick with his third marker of the night and 15th of the season to finish the scoring at 7-3 with 16.7 seconds left to play. The last goal was an unassisted, shorthanded empty-netter.

Papineau was the first star of the game, Campoli was the second and Vorobiev was the third. The Sound Tigers were 1 for 8 on the power play while Norfolk was 1 for 6 and had a 33-27 shots on goal advantage. Dieter Kochan made 30 saves for his 18th win of the season for the Sound Tigers while Munro made nine saves and Brodeur made 11 for the Admirals.

The Sound Tigers will finish a three-game road trip tomorrow versus the Hershey Bears tomorrow at 7 p.m. They will return to Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard to host the Binghamton Senators this Sunday at 4:05 p.m. Both games will be web cast live at www.soundtigers.com with tomorrow's game also airing live on 600 WICC-AM.
