Nashville Kats News Release

NASHVILLE (Mar. 31, 2005) – The Nashville Kats have signed quarterback Scott Rislov to the practice squad, head coach Pat Sperduto announced on Thursday. The team also waived quarterback Tony Zimmerman and moved quarterback Bill Whittemore and lineman Ryan Roth to the active roster, while resigning wide receiver/linebacker Cosmo DeMatteo and wide receiver/defensive back Rich Musinski to the practice squad. Defensive specialist Tony Scott was placed on injured reserve with a quadriceps injury.

Rislov (6-1, 219) was one of the nation’s most accurate passers as quarterback at San Jose State, where he became the only player in school history to throw for 3,000 yards in consecutive seasons. He started 24 consecutive games for the Spartans in his two-years at SJSU and threw for twice as many touchdowns (40) as interceptions (19). Rislov was the MVP of the 2003 Blue-Gray All-Star Classic, and he became the first player at San Jose State in a generation to hold a 4.0 grade point average for three consecutive semesters. He was in camp with the Cincinnati Bengals last season, and he will be placed on Nashville’s four-man practice squad.

To make room for Rislov, the Kats waived Zimmerman (6-3, 220) and elevated Whittemore (6-0, 205) from the practice squad to the active roster. Zimmerman started three games for Nashville while regular starting QB Leon Murray was out with a knee injury, completing 78-of-130 passes for 809 yards, nine TD’s and three interceptions. Whittemore, who hails from nearby Brentwood, Tenn., and was an honorable mention All-Big 12 QB at Kansas, will now move into the role of Murray’s backup after spending the majority of the year on the practice squad. He was on the active roster for the Kats’s game against Colorado on March 12, when Murray was on injured reserve.

The Kats also activated Roth (6-3, 275), a rookie from Southeast Missouri who has spent the last seven weeks on the practice squad after playing in the first two games of the season. They also re-signed DeMatteo (6-1, 205) and Musinski (6-0, 205) to the practice squad after placing the pair on recallable waivers last Friday.

The Kats placed Scott (5-10, 190), who has missed all but two games of the season due to injury, on injured reserve. The veteran defensive specialist missed the first five weeks of the season with a groin injury. After coming back to register five tackles in two games, he injured his quadriceps in practice last week and was inactive for the loss to Arizona. He will miss a minimum of two more weeks after being placed on IR.

Today’s moves come just hours after the Kats acquired veteran WR/DB T.T. Toliver from Tampa Bay in a trade for exempt player Fred Booker. Toliver (5-11, 185), who is one of five new additions to the team’s roster during the month of March alone, is not expected to play in this week’s game at Grand Rapids. The Kats take on the Rampage on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. CT. The game will be televised live on Fox Sports Net South.
