Rockford Lightning News Release

Rockford, IL-The CBA League Office announced today that Lightning guard/forward Marshall Phillips has been named to the league's All-Defensive team for the 2004-05 season. Phillips joins Dakota Wizards' guard/forward Melvin Sanders, Sioux Falls Skyforce guard DeSean Hadley, Yakima Sun Kings forward Noel Felix, and Idaho Stampede forward/center Sam Clancy, who won 2004-05 CBA Defensive Player of the Year.

Phillips is the first Rockford Lightning player to be named to an All-Defensive team since current teammate Livan Pyfrom made the team in the 2002-03 season. Marshall led the Lightning in steals with 88, and finished the season third in the league in that category, averaging 2.2 steals per game. That helped the Lightning to be best in the league in steals with 474 steals over the course of the year. Phillips also averaged 6.2 rebounds per game, and hauled down 160 defensive rebounds in 2004-05. In 40 games played, Marshall also posted 19.4 points, 3.1 assists, and 0.6 blocked shots per game.

"With the eight steals that Marshall had in the first playoff game, it shows that he is worthy of being on the All-Defensive team. He's also worthy of being an MVP candidate. He has had that type of year," says Lightning head coach Chris Daleo. Phillips is the only player from the Eastern Conference to make the CBA's All-Defensive team for this season.

Phillips and the Lightning take on Great Lakes in Game 2 of their playoff series tonight at the Birch Run Expo Center. The Lightning need a big win, after losing Game 1 to the Storm 130-127 in overtime. Then, the Lightning return home to face the Storm on Saturday, March 19, at the Rockford MetroCentre at 1:05 p.m. Not only will you be able to see great CBA playoff action, but there will be televisions set up in the Miller Lite Beer Garden so that you can catch a glimpse of NCAA tournament action. Order your tickets now by calling the MetroCentre box office at 815-968-5222.
