Mullet News: Mullet Wigs Two Inches Longer This Year
February 25, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH â The Manchester Monarchs, the top affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, will celebrate "hockey hair" one last time when they host the Worcester IceCats at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Tuesday, March 1 at 7:05 p.m. In a fitting tribute to this unique hairstyle (a.k.a. the Achy-Breaky Big Mistakey), the Monarchs will once again provide the first 5,000 fans attending Tuesday's game with a free Mullet wig, courtesy of TRIMZ Family Haircut Center in Manchester. Even better, the Mullet wigs will be two inches longer this year.
"Everyone knows that bigger is better, so when we had the option to add two extra inches to the Mullet wigs, we had to go for it," said Dave Sholow, the executive director of the Mullet Hall of Fame, which recognizes members of the sports and entertainment industry who possess the proper ratio of short hair in the front (10 percent) and long hair in the back (90 percent). "To us, it's like buying an IROC-Z and asking if you want flames painted on the car for free. I mean, who doesn't do that?"
According to Sholow, the Mullet Hall of Fame will soon be forced to close its doors because the American Barbers Association has pulled its funding. The ABA believes it's losing money thanks to the increased popularity of the Mullet (a.k.a. the Ape Drape), and their inability to charge full price for a Mullet haircut.
Fans attending the Monarchs â IceCats game on March 1 will witness the end of an era when the Mullet Hall of Fame inducts one final member into its cherished halls. On hand for this sad but historic event will be former Mullet Hall of Fame winners Barry Melrose, a former coach of the Kings and current ESPN personality, and The Hanson Brothers, immortalized as members of the Charlestown Chiefs in the classic hockey movie, "Slap Shot." Other previous winners (Patrick Swayze, Randy Johnson and Billy Ray Cyrus) will join the celebration via satellite.
Tickets for Mullet Night â The Final Cut, sponsored by TRIMZ Family Haircut Center, are on sale now and may be purchased at the Verizon Wireless Arena box office. Individual tickets may also be purchased by calling Ticketmaster at (603) 868-7300, or by visiting Ticketmaster on-line at www.ticketmaster.com.
Hockey fans across all of North America have shared in the celebration of the Mullet (a.k.a. the Kentucky Waterfall) over the last two years as major media outlets including CNN, CNN Headline News, ESPN's SportsCenter, ESPN's NHL2Night and Fox Sports have provided coverage of the induction ceremonies.

Mullet Night: Through the Years

Along with the induction of the Hanson Brothers into the Mullet Hall of Fame, 13-year-old Devin Tebo of Derry, New Hampshire was awarded his second straight Grand Mullet of the Night title for having the best Mullet in the state.
A capacity crowd of 9,916 witnessed the first-ever Mullet Night celebration, held in conjunction with the Monarchs game against the Portland Pirates on February 21, 2003. That event included the induction of Melrose into the Mullet Hall of Fame.
