St. Louis Steamers News Release

St. Louis, MO, January 5, 2005 –St. Louis Steamers Team President Michael Hetelson, announced today that the team selected five players in today’s Monterrey Fury, San Diego Sockers’ Dispersal Draft.

The Steamers had the third overall pick in the draft. The draft order was determined by the lowest winning percentage of the teams over the past two seasons. With the third overall pick, the Steamers selected midfielder Mariano Bollella. The 5’-6’’, 155-pound midfielder played in seven games with San Diego this season, recording six points (five goals, one assist) along with 22 shots and seven fouls. The Steamers chose defenseman Sean Bowers from San Diego with the 10th overall pick. The 6’-3’’ 190-pound defenseman collected four assists along with 12 blocks in five games with the Sockers this season.

St. Louis selected Monterrey’s leading scorer Marco “Chikis” Lopez with the 17th overall pick in the third round. The 5’-3’’, 146-pound forward finished fifth in last years scoring race, tallying 61 points (29 goals, 32 assists) in 35 games.

“Very seldom do you go into a draft and get exactly everything you want, said player/head coach Daryl Doran, but we were able to get three of our first four players on our wish list, which is very unique.” Doran added, “The hardest part now is going to be to get all of these players underneath the cap, we were able to add depth all across the board in the draft, which is a very good thing.”

The Steamers chose goalkeeper Justin Neerhoff from San Diego in the fourth round. Neerhoof appeared in one game for the Sockers this season, collecting an 0-1 record with a 3.17 goals against average. St. Louis selected forward Renaldo Candido Pereira from Monterrey in the fifth round and goalkeeper Riley Swift from San Diego in the sixth round.
