Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Goldeyes manager Hal Lanier has done well by the Canadians he has signed in past and he hopes that trend continues.

Lanier announced today the signing of outfielder Matt Gunning, 23, the first player under contract for the 2005 season. A Canadian from Victoria who can also play first base, Gunning went to school at NCAA Division I Western Kentucky, hitting .375 with 15 home runs and 73 runs batted in during his senior year en route to being named Sun Belt Player of the Year.

"That’s a pretty good honour in a tough conference like that playing against some great schools," Lanier said. "Having a rookie that can play a couple positions, and hopefully he can really add to our offence with his power, I think it’s just going to be a great signing for us."

Gunning’s signing comes two days before the Goldeyes begin their week-long holiday blowout sale. Fans looking for savings can pop by the ballpark starting at 10 a.m. Saturday to pick up merchandise that has been drastically reduced.

They can even say hi to all-star third baseman Pat Scalabrini, in town for the team’s Princess Auto Holiday Skills Camp, who’ll be signing autographs from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Scalabrini will join teammates Donnie Smith and Steve Murray, along with Seattle Mariners pitcher George Sherrill, at the U of W on December 23 to offer instruction to boys and girls ages eight to 14. Roughly 40 spots remained in the holiday camp as of 9 a.m. Thursday.

The cost is $80 (GST included) and includes six hours of instruction, a t-shirt, lunch, special giveaways and prizes. Method of payment is cash, credit card or cheque made payable to the Winnipeg Goldeyes Baseball Club.

Potential campers can call the Goldeyes office at 982-2273 or drop by the ballpark to register.
