Greensboro Grasshoppers News Release
(GREENSBORO, NC) Brandon Hyde returns for his third season in Greensboro taking on the new role of Manager for the Single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers followed by a field staff announced today by the team.
Also returning for his third season is Scott Mitchell as the Greensboro Grasshoppers Pitching Coach. Florida Marlins newcomer, Bo Porter, will join the staff as Hitting Coach.
Were excited to have Brandon and Scott return to Greensboro for the 2005 season, said President Donald Moore. They both do a fine job on the field and enjoy working in Greensboro. Bo Porter will be a great addition to an already successful field staff.
Hyde and Mitchell help to guide the Greensboro Bats to a sixth place, second half finish in the South Atlantic League Southern Division with a 30-39 second half record in 2004. Hyde played with the Chicago White Sox from 1997-2001.
Hyde originally signed with the White Sox in 1997 as a Free Agent out of Long Beach State University.
Its exciting to be taking over the Manager duties of the Greensboro Grasshoppers. Im looking forward to opening and playing in a new ballpark and consider myself lucky to have been picked for the job, said Manager Brandon Hyde.
Mitch and I work really well together so it is just an added bonus that he is coming back. I have heard great things about Bo Porter and actually played against him in the past. I look forward to working with these experienced and respected ballplayers.
Mitchell begins his fourth season with the Florida Marlins organization and third season with Greensboro Baseball as the Pitching Coach. Greensboro is a great city with great fans and a great front office. I look forward to playing in a new stadium and delivering a Championship team, said Mitchell.
Prior to his time with Greensboro, Mitchell worked as the Pitching Coach with the Marlins Rookie League team in Jamestown, NY. A graduate of the University of Pacific, he was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 22nd round of the 1995 draft.
Bo Porter begins his first season as a minor league coach and his first with the Florida Marlins organization. He made his major-league debut in 1999 as an outfielder with the Chicago Cubs. Porter also saw time at the major league level from 2000-2003 with various organizations including the Oakland As, Texas Rangers and Atlanta Braves. In 2001, he carried a batting average of .230 through 48 games with the Rangers.
A University of Iowa graduate, Porter was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the fortieth round of the 1993 amateur draft.
The Grasshoppers open their new ballpark with an exhibition game against the Florida Marlins on April 3, 2005 at 2:00PM. The official home opener will be Saturday, April 9 versus the Hickory Crawdads.
